Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took the rehab portion of his journey this offseason as an opportunity to alter some of the basics.

Let Burrow tell it, he tweaked his throwing motion this offseason while trying to get stronger in the hips — all in the pursuit of getting better at passing down the field.

In an in-depth look at Burrow’ rehab from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Burrow revealed the motion change:

“With my knee, it felt the same. But I tweak my throwing motion every offseason and tweak my base. It was actually kind of beneficial for me, because I really started from the beginning and was able to refine some things that needed refining.”

The goal? More power and accuracy:

“I just wasn’t accurate as I was the year before [at LSU] down the field. And that was frustrating to me, because I’ve always been a good down-the-field thrower. Just getting back to the basics of that, really focusing on my fundamentals. I just started running and throwing a few weeks ago, so standing and throwing, and focusing on the fundamentals helped.”

That’s typical Burrow, right? Turning a negative into a positive and despite needing to recover from a season-ending injury, also finding ways to tweak the basics of his game so he can improve upon his return.

Along those same lines, the retold story of his finally greeting his parents after the injury, only to discuss how well his offense played against Washington’s pass defense on the day of the injury.

If it all goes according to plan for Burrow, he’s aiming to not only be back at 100 percent soon, he’s hoping to be even better.
