The claim: All Bed Bath & Beyond stores are closing May 23, Chicco car seats are being sold for $9.97

A May 18 Facebook post (direct link, archive link) claims a bankrupt big-box retailer is closing all of its locations this month and selling baby gear at unbeatable prices.

“Bed Bath & Beyond stores close May 23,” reads the post. “Due to this, our store is selling all items at a super price! There are only 90 Chicco car seats left in stock at $9.97!”

Bed Bath & Beyond did not close all of its stores on May 23, nor is it selling car seats at that price. Chicco car seats are sold on the retailer's website at prices ranging from $190 to $370. The posts are made by scam pages that are not affiliated with the brand.

Chicco car seats being sold for hundreds on Bed Bath & Beyond site

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy protection in April and announced it would be closing its more than 350 stores, as reported by USA TODAY. Though end-of-business sales promptly began, the company said claims of $10 car seats are false.

“The post … is not an official Bad Bath & Beyond communication or accurate,” said spokesperson Jennifer Lawson.

Unlike the store’s official Facebook page, the user touting the promotion does not have a blue verified check mark that indicates it is a legitimate brand account. The page’s profile picture also does not match the official Bed Bath & Beyond logo.

Though the post says users can accept the deal by going to the website, it does not provide a working link. Additionally, the red cart corral seen in the photo attached to the post indicates it was taken at a Target, not a Bed Bath & Beyond.

Despite the discounts available on some merchandise, Chicco car seats were still listed between $190 and $370 on Bed Bath & Beyond's website as of May 25.

Bed Bath & Beyond discounts are only valid in stores, which remained open after May 23.
