No. 19 - Thomas Tyner
5-foot-11, 201 pounds
Redshirt Senior (could potentially be granted a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA)
2014 stats: 113 rushes, 573 yards, 5 TD's ... 11 receptions, 67 yards, TD
Thomas Tyner has not played football since 2014 after sitting out the 2015 and 2016 season after medically retiring from the University of Oregon. However, in May, Tyner decided that he wanted to return to football at Oregon State.
On the surface, the Thomas Tyner-Gary Andersen marriage looks like a slam dunk for both sides. For Tyner, he gets another shot at returning to the game, while for Andersen, he gets a former five star recruit with very little risk. If Tyner can be the same player that he was in his time at UO, the Beavers could have one of the best running backs in the country in their backfield in 2017.
Greaves' take on Tyner
For each player in the BeaversEdge Top 20, Marcus Greaves will provide analysis of each player. Greaves played for the Beavers from 2014-2017 and has joined BeaversEdge.com as a football analyst.
"This has been a very interesting pick up for the Beavers. Tyner is a proven five star recruit, who has unbelievable speed and vision. He has shown that he is an elite player and at one point was ranked a top 25 back in the country. I’m expecting him to bring a “elite” label to the OSU backfield. With Pierce and Nall, OSU already has great backs, and adding Tyner to the mix could possibly put them over the top as the best backfield in the conference. I think Tyner will shine just as he did at Oregon. He will have to learn a brand new offense, and questions are still arising upon how healthy he truly is. With a shoulder surgery under his belt already, it is going to be interesting to see if he is back feeling as good as he did when he was a duck."
