Kevin Abel, Chase Watkins selected on Day 2 of 2021 MLB Draft originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
Day 2 of the 2021 MLB Draft has wrapped up and a pair of Beavers heard their names called for a trip to the bigs.
Right-handed pitcher Kevin Abel and left-handed pitcher Chase Watkins each got the call on Monday.
Let's take a quick look at where the two landed:
Kevin Abel: Seventh round, 210th overall, Cincinnati Reds
Abel was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the seventh round, marking the second time in his career he has been drafted. Back in 2017, prior to arriving at OSU, Abel was selected in the 35th round by the San Diego Padres.
Rather than head to the MLB, Abel went to Corvallis.
The 6' 1", 195lb Abel went 8-1 in 2018 en route to being named National Freshman of the Year. That same season he won four games during the postseason, helping OSU win the College World Series.
Overall, Abel is 13-6 at OSU with a 3.31 ERA, 242 strikeouts, and an opponent batting average of just .172.
This is the fifth time Cincinnati has selected a member of the Beavers.
Chase Watkins: Ninth round, 274th overall, Chicago Cubs
Unlike Abel, Watkins doesn't have a previous MLB Draft selection under his belt, meaning this is the first time he has heard his name called.
2021 was Watkins' first year in Corvallis, after stops at Cal Poly and College of Central Florida, and he did not disappoint.
He totaled 38 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings and held opponents to a .198 batting average.
Watkins becomes the fourth Beaver in program history to be selected by the Cubs.
There are still a few Beavers waiting to hear their name called, and hopefully, that happens on Day 3.
The MLB Draft concludes Tuesday with rounds 11-20. You can watch live at MLB.com.
