Bearkats to play at Bowers Stadium in 2024

Feb. 5—HUNTSVILLE — After the 2023 football season ended, Sam Houston football faced several questions about the upcoming 2024 season. One of those questions was where the Bearkats might play their home games during construction.

The question was answered during an episode of BSN Xtra that came out Sunday evening. Sam Houston athletic director Bobby Williams announced that the Bearkats will remain home at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium instead of playing elsewhere.

Williams said the decision came after meetings with Sam Houston State University president Dr. Alisa White and SHSU Chief Financial Officer Amanda Withers.

"Back in the fall, there were a lot of discussions with Dr. White and Amanda Withers, our CFO, about Bowers, where we are at and what my recommendation on how we were going to implement when construction started," Williams said in his appearance on BSN Xtra. "The more I looked at it, the more I didn't want to play other places. We have the NRG game and we want to make sure we are playing at Bowers so people can see what is going on. I approached Amanda about it and she was on the same page. We are going to play at Bowers Stadium. I think we can get it done. It will be some temporary type setups, but it will be a positive note."

The Bearkats will once again see construction at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium as they played the Spring 2021 slate with contraction happening on the field house. Last season, visitors had white tents around the bottom of the field house.

Part of this has been the ongoing renovations that happened after the 2021 renovations.

"That's on track to be ready for this fall," Williams said. "That is one of those things we ran into when we were renovating the field house. Some things happened infrastructure wise and we were unable to get what we needed."

Sam Houston will host Hawai'i, New Mexico State, Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech and Liberty at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium. The schedule also features Rice in Houston and a rivalry game against Texas State at NRG Stadium.
