From the first day of the season, Battle Creek Central thought this could be a special season. With a roster full of experienced seniors and knowing the district tournament would be played at the BCC Fieldhouse, the Bearcats had the makings of a year to remember.

By the end, most of BCC's dreams came true as the Bearcats won their first district title in six years and advanced to the regional finals.

For directing his group to a successful campaign, Battle Creek Central's Durant Crum is our choice for the Battle Creek Enquirer 2023 All-City Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.

Battle Creek Central went 17-8, nearly doubling its win total from last season and ending up with its first winning season since 2017. Along the way, Crum helped BCC to its first district title since winning back-to-back crowns in 2016-17. In each of those seasons, the Bearcats were knocked out in the first round of the regionals. Behind Crum this season, it was the first time BCC had advanced to the regional finals in more than 15 years.

Crum is joined on the team by three BCC standouts in Ke'Marion Tucker, Mark Lane and Kierre Young.

Lakeview went 14-8 and adds three All-City players as well, including Jashaun Boggerty, Walter Brown and Ethan Bagent.

Harper Creek reached double digits in the win total with a young team as Beavers' KeyShaun Matthews and Cooper Fry are All-City selections.

Pennfield adds Graham Boyd and Brendan Duncan to the team and St. Philip's Jackson Dzwik and Calhoun Christian's Micah Reed were also selected.
