Bayern Munich set to replace Tuchel with Man United flop this week

Bayern Munich are moving closer to appointing a former Man United boss as their next manager.

The Bavarian outfit have been searching for a new head coach since February, when they announced Thomas Tuchel will vacate the dugout at the end of the season.

The former Chelsea manager only arrived at the club in March of last year, guiding the side to an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.

But he has endured a difficult first full campaign, relinquishing the league to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen and getting knocked out of the German Cup by third tier club FC Saarbrucken.

Tuchel could still guide Bayern to glory in the Uefa Champions League as his side prepare to face Real Madrid in the semi-final first leg at home on Tuesday night.

Victory in the competition won’t be enough to save his job, as Bayern are committed to finding a new manager.

Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi and Julian Nagelsmann have all been touted as possible candidates for the role, but the club have reportedly decided on a shock successor to Tuchel.

According to German outlet ran (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are “confident” they can reach an agreement with Ralf Rangnick as soon as Wednesday, if not the day after.

Rangnick’s last job in club football saw him take interim charge of Man United in November 2021, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the hot seat.

The Red Devils went on to earn just 58 points by the end of the season, their worst points total in Premier League history.

Rangnick, who is currently managing the Austrian national team as they prepare to compete at Euro 2024 this summer, looks nailed-on to get the Bayern job.

The club’s key decision-makers, including Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, are all in agreement over the appointment. It is claimed the former RB Leipzig manager will be handed a contract until 2027 and have a big say in recruitment.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also working on extending Leroy Sane’s contract at the club, according to Sky Sports Germany. The former Man City winger’s current deal expires in 2025.
