BATTLE OF DEFENSES: Lady Tigers outlast Bishop Kelly

Jan. 12—Despite a late run, the Tahlequah Lady Tigers took down the Bishop Kelly Comets 42-32 on Friday, Jan. 12.

"Kelly has been dangerous at times this year, we knew that going in," THS Head Coach David Qualls said. "The fundamentals on defense they do a really good job. Their zone gave us some problems in the fourth."

Despite the late fourth quarter stretch, the Lady Tigers held on thanks to good defense to secure the win. THS' defense was locked down from the jump. After allowing just six points in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers hounded the ball in the second quarter.

Throughout the second quarter, the Comets could not get any buckets to drop. During that period, the Lady Tigers picked up some blocks from Kori Rainwater and Carsyn Gilbert and played lockdown defense.

It took six minutes into the second quarter for the Comets to get their first points of the period. THS limited the Comets to just 11 first-half points, including five in the second.

"Defensively we had a great game. Limiting them to just six points over the first 13 minutes. Our defense won it for us early on," Qualls said. "Being active, taking good angles and helping each other out. It was really just communicating and playing good man-to-man defense."

THS continued the strong defense in the third period, once again allowing just six points.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Comets found their footing. Despite being down 32-17, the Comets made it a fight to finish the game. Using a strong zone defense, the Comets were able to get some points on transition. The surge saw the Comets get within 10 points with two minutes left.

Despite giving the Lady Tigers a late run, THS would make sure the Comets could not chip away at their lead anymore and secured the win.

"I thought they turned defense into offense. They got that extended zone and for some reason, we didn't take care of it, we didn't exculpate. Credit them they capitalized on mistakes, but we did a good job of closing it out," Qualls said.

Jaydyn Buttery led the way with 15 points. Kori Rainwater was also in double-digit scoring with 13.

THS will be back in action at 6 p.m. against Booker T. Washington on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
