Warner Bros. just dropped a new trailer for DC's The Batman, providing a handful more clues as to what the plot and tone of the movie will be. While previous teasers for the movie have focused on the brooding Bruce Wayne as played by the latest actor to take on the role, Robert Pattinson, with brief shots of the other characters, this two-minute clip widens the scope a little—and heavily hints that The Riddler will be the central villain of the piece.

That isn't to say there is not a whole bunch of comic-book bad guys in the trailer. On the contrary: the movie appears to be packed with an entire trilogy's worth of criminal masterminds and cronies.

We get a little more footage of Colin Farrell's interpretation of The Penguin (and yes, he still looks unrecognizable under those prosthetics), and the Irish actor seems to be playing him like something out of a Martin Scorsese movie, which is ironic given Marty's less-than-genial past comments on superhero cinema.

The trailer also includes a menacing gang of crooks all wearing masks which look a cross between Scarecrow in Batman Begins and Joker in The Dark Knight. And course, the trailer includes more of Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman, the antiheroine who looks like she'll be acting as a romantic foil to Pattinson's Batman. In one moment, she appears so taken aback by our protagonist's ultraviolent approach to justice that it would almost make him look like the true villain, if our expectations weren't being set up in a different way.

We have yet to see much of the Riddler outside of a couple of brief glimpses of a man in a green hood and goggles. Perhaps we won't see actor Paul Dano's face in the movie at all, and he will only be known by his costume, like Michael Myers in the Halloween movies. But it is more likely that the studio is trying to whip up some mystique around the character, whose machinations seem to be what will drive the plot of the movie.

The Riddler is described in the trailer as the "match" which will light up the tinderbox of Gotham City. So it definitely seems like when he does finally step into the spotlight, the reveal will be nothing short of explosive.

The Batman will be released on March 4, 2022.
