BASKETBALL: Minco teams win district titles

Feb. 19—The Minco basketball teams went on the road and took care of business.

The Class 2A playoffs started Friday, and the two Minco teams traveled to Dibble for a district between area teams. Big second quarters helped both teams gain momentum, and both teams picked up district titles.

The Lady Bulldogs faced a shorthanded Dibble squad and took advantage of that fact by pulling away for a 56-44 victory. The Minco boys held off Dibble and earned a 57-49 victory over the Demons.

Both teams put up 13 points in the first quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs ended the first quarter on a run and extended that run to gain major separation before halftime.

Dibble grabbed a 13-8 lead in the first quarter before Minco scored the final five points of the period. That 5-0 run became a 23-0 run in the second quarter and gave the Lady Bulldogs a commanding 31-13 lead over the Lady Demons.

That 23-0 run included two 3-pointers apiece from Laney Harris and Briley Edwards. A 19-5 quarter gave Minco a 32-18 halftime lead, and the Lady Bulldogs kept Dibble from getting too close in the second half.

Harris made her presence known early for the Lady Bulldogs. She scored 18 points in the game and scored 15 of those points in the first half.

Tatum Wright helped carry Minco in the second half, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the final two quarters.

Minco will play at 6 p.m. Thursday. Minco will face second-ranked Riverside in Minco.

Dibble's next game will be Thursday and will be in Minco. The Lady Demons will take on Hinton at 1 p.m.

The second quarter did not give Minco complete command of the game like it did the girls, but it did take a deficit after the first quarter and make it a halftime lead.

Dibble ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run and held a 17-9 lead after the first quarter. But the shooting of Riley Beck helped the Bulldogs begin the second quarter on a 15-0 run and helped them outscore Dibble 20-9 in the second quarter.

Three of Beck's four 3-pointers and 11 of his 14 points came in the second quarter, and Minco led 29-26 at halftime.

The Demons continued to hang around in the second half, but the Bulldogs managed to fend off their opponent.

Reed McMurtrey ended the game with 16 points for Minco to go along with Beck's 14 points. Caiden Brown also reached double figures for the Bulldogs.

Minco will take on No. 11 Riverside at approximately 7:30 p.m. Thursday. That game will be in Minco.
