BASKETBALL: Jerdee lifts Ninnekah in tourney win over Asher

Jan. 8—ALEX — A dominant performance helped the Ninnekah Owls overcome an early deficit.

Competing in the Longhorn Classic's third-place game in Alex on Saturday, the Owls found themselves in a 9-1 hole against an Asher team ranked 20th in Class B during the tournament. But one Ninnekah player ended up almost outscoring Asher by himself, and Ninnekah ended up pulling away for a 47-33 victory.

JJ Jerdee had more points by himself than Asher did as a team for a good portion of the game before Asher ended up with a couple more points. Jerdee scored 19 points in the first half and ended the game with 31 points for the Owls.

But the Owls needed to climb out of that 9-1 hole if they wanted to capture a third-place victory.

Jerdee hit a pair of 3s and scored seven points in a 10-1 run that gave the Owls an 11-10 lead after the first quarter. Eli Brake scored the other three points in that run by hitting a long-range shot for Ninnekah.

Jerdee owned the second quarter on offense. The senior scored all 12 of Ninnekah's points in the quarter, and the Owls held Asher to five points in the period.

Up 23-15 at halftime, Ninnekah pushed its lead to double digits in the third quarter. The Owls extended their lead to 17 points in the period before leading by 15 points after three quarters and keeping Asher at a safe distance in the final quarter.

Along with Jerdee's 31 points, Brake added 11 points for the Owls.

Ninnekah defeated Mountain View-Gotebo in the opening round before losing to Cyril in the semifinals and finishing the tournament with a win.
