BASKETBALL: Cyril teams advance to Longhorn Classic finals

Jan. 8—ALEX — The Cyril basketball teams each picked up a couple of wins in the Longhorn Classic.

The Lady Pirates and Pirates competed in Alex's Longhorn Classic last week and had success. The two teams advanced to the championship games in the tournament and finished second, only losing to teams ranked in the top 10 of Class B.

After picking up wins over Calumet and Stratford in the first two rounds of the tournament, Cyril faced Mountain View-Gotebo in a battle of two ranked teams. Cyril threatened to come back late, but Mountain View-Gotebo survived for a 40-36 win.

Cyril entered the tournament ranked third in Class A, and Mountain View-Gotebo entered the tournament ranked eighth in Class B. And the game lived up to the billing.

Mountain View-Gotebo led by nine points at halftime, but a pair of 3-pointers to open the scoring in the second half pulled the Lady Pirates to within three points of the Lady Tigers. That fighting spirit almost led to a furious comeback late in the game.

Cyril trailed by seven points with time running out but went on a quick 5-0 run before losing by four points. The Lady Pirates got a big game from Hadley Gibson in the loss.

After defeating Alex and Ninnekah in the first two rounds of the tournament, Cyril had the challenge of trying to knock off a top-ranked Calumet team. Cyril was in a close game with Calumet entering the second half, but the Chieftains pulled away and picked up a 62-43 victory.

Calumet extended its lead to double digits in the second quarter, but the Pirates fought back after going behind 22-10. Cyril finished the half on a 9-2 run and only trailed Class B's No. 1 team by five points at halftime.

But the Chieftains gained separation in the second half.

The Pirates got offensive boosts from a player like Nash Harman and the long-range shooting of Cash Day.
