BASKETBALL: Am-Po knocks off ranked Cyril squad at home

Feb. 7—The rankings did not matter.

The Amber-Pocasset Lady Panthers entered Tuesday's game as an unranked team in Class A taking on a Cyril team ranked No. 4 in the same class. The Lady Panthers fell behind in the first quarter but overcame that deficit and that difference in the rankings to pick up what can be considered a signature victory in Amber.

Both teams struggled to get much separation throughout the game, but the Lady Panthers had enough when it mattered most and knocked off the fourth-ranked Lady Pirates. They took home a 44-39 victory.

The long ball helped Cyril gain some separation in the first quarter.

Cyril hit a pair of 3s in a 10-2 run that put the team up 10-4 in the period. Am-Po's response was an 8-0 run to go up 12-10 and an 11-3 run to end the first quarter with a 15-13 lead.

Five Am-Po players scored at least five points in the win, and one of those players was Julie Jones. Jones provided a spark for Am-Po by scoring all five of her points during that 11-3 run and hitting a 3-pointer.

The two teams ended up going to halftime in a 20-20 tie, and the Lady Panthers held a slim lead of two points after three quarters. The exclamation point came when Gracen Hicks knocked the ball away from the opposing player, drove down the floor and scored to put Am-Po up five with just seconds remaining in the game.

Brooke Brown led the way for Am-Po. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the win.

Am-Po also got points from Hicks, Jones, Sadie Linn, Ainslee McComas and Faith Carpenter.
