Baratunde Thurston Gets on The Soap Box with Some Pre-Election Optimism

From Esquire

We know: Leading up to the election, these are peak times for the talking heads. But when you're getting spoon-fed through commercials and word wars by the big networks, what are you really getting? Here's something unfiltered for you: "The Soap Box," our video new series about the goings-on in American politics and culture. First up? An impassioned first episode from comedian, writer, and critic Baratunde Thurston. Just get a taste for yourself.

“Don’t let anybody try to convince you that you are not welcome in, or a part of, your own country,” Thurston says. “It belongs to all of us. Don’t feel weak and meek and ashamed of your doubts and criticisms about your land. It’s part of what it means to be a patriot. This land really is your land. And it’s my land.”

In the rest of the episode, Thurston talks Amy Coney Barrett, what's still left to change in the aftermath of our summer of social upheaval, and yeah, the Trump administration. But don't worry—it's not all doom and gloom. Leading up to one of the most important elections in American history, Thurston left us with a note of hope. (And facts.)

“History has its eyes on you and it’s coming for that ass,” he says. “Because every time people like you have tried, you have eventually failed. Every. Single. Time. And for those of you fighting this Jedi fight on the side of the light, on the side of the light, don’t give up. This ain’t over! It ain’t over. Recognize the illegitimacy of their victories. Don’t be weakened by it—be strengthened by it. Find your truth. Anchor to it. And power forward.
