Barack and Michelle Obama Share Birthday Tributes to Sasha

Barack and Michelle Obama are getting sentimental over Sasha turning 20!

The former President and First Lady both posted throwback tributes to their daughter, whose birthday was on June 10. In his post, Obama shared a photo of himself holding Sasha as a little girl, and she can be seen smiling over his shoulder. “Happy birthday, Sasha!” he wrote in the caption. “You’ve grown so much, and it’s been a joy to watch you become the person we always hoped you’d be. Your mom and I can’t wait to see where life takes you next.”

Similarly, Michelle also shared a photo from Sasha’s childhood, showing her daughter sitting in her lap aboard a boat, wearing a life jacket and grinning at her mother. “Happy birthday to my darling Sasha!” the former First Lady began. “I am so grateful for every laugh we’ve shared — and everything you’ve taught me over the years. You’ll always be my little girl, but I couldn’t be prouder of the woman you are becoming. Love you so much!”

Sasha, who is currently studying at the University of Michigan, is Barack and Michelle’s younger daughter; their older child, Malia, will be turning 23 in July.

In an interview with CBS This Morning earlier this year, Michelle reflected on her daughters’ growth, sharing the mixed emotions she’s experienced over the years. “I almost forgot that this year, this summer, they're going to be 23 and 20,” she said at the time. “I mean, I'm just like, 'Stop there.' I don't even have teenagers anymore. So I am excited for her next chapter. That's why I want to be as excited as every parent.”

Michelle also touched on her complicated feelings about Malia graduating from school and entering the “real” world as an independent adult. “I don't want to have to worry about [Malia] entering a world where she has to worry about how people would treat her because of the color of her skin,” she explained. “I am excited, but I'd like to be more excited…to know that as she goes out and gets her first apartment and rides the subway somewhere, that they don't make assumptions about her based on the color of her skin. That she's not at risk, out there in the world as an adult, because she's a Black woman.”

But alongside the thoughts about the future, Barack and Michelle have been appreciating the present. The former First Lady previously told People that they enjoyed getting spend extra time at home with Sasha and Malia throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. “This time has allowed us to get some stolen moments back with our girls,” Michelle explained. “Those recaptured moments have meant the world to us and I think they've made our relationships with our children even stronger.”
