Baltimore Sun high school Athletes of the Week (Jan. 22-28): Gilman’s Cam Brown and McDonogh’s Elise Cooper

Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.

Boys sport Athlete of the Week: Cam Brown, Gilman, track and field

The junior took home two gold medals at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championships on Friday, leading the Greyhounds to a second-place showing behind champion Calvert Hall. Brown enjoyed a personal best in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and won the high jump (22-2). Currently ranked second in Maryland in the long jump, he’ll compete in that event at the Nike Indoor National Championships in New York in March.

Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Elise Cooper, McDonogh, track and field

Last year’s All-Metro indoor track and field Athlete of the Year continued her dominance at the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland championships on Friday with three individual titles along with a relay crown for the champion Eagles. The senior sprinter set a meet record in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds and won the 300 (38.94 seconds) and 500 (1:18.79). Teaming with (Grace Richardson and her sisters, Elena Cooper and Ella Cooper, she ran a sensational leg in McDonogh’s 800-meter relay that set a meet record with a time of 1:42.65. McDonogh won the team title with 208 points.
