Ballard too much for improved Cardinals in regional opener

Feb. 18—HUXLEY — Newton and Ballard scored more than 10 points in a quarter just once on Wednesday. And the strong first period led the Bombers past the Newton girls basketball team during a Class 4A Region 4 contest.

Ballard led 16-9 after one and coasted from there during a 38-26 postseason victory. The Bombers won the second 7-6, outscored the Cardinals 8-6 in the third and had a 7-5 surplus in the fourth.

Tori White led the Cardinals with five points, 12 rebounds and two assists. Alex Garvis contributed five points, eight rebounds and two steals, Payton Carkhuff chipped in six points and four boards and Bella Winther contributed five points and two rebounds.

Evie Main posted three points and four rebounds and Alex Riney grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists.

The Cardinals (7-15) shot 21.6 percent from the floor, made 4-of-14 from 3-point range and connected on 6-of-13 from the free-throw line. Newton turned the ball over 17 times in its season-ending loss.

Alliyah Thompson led the Bombers (13-9) with 20 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Ballard, which lost by four to Pella on Saturday, shot 28 percent from the floor, made 3-of-15 from 3 and connected on 9-of-15 from the foul line.
