Baker Mayfield is a master troll.

Mayfield began his career as a walk-on at Texas Tech before transferring to Oklahoma and becoming a star. Saturday night marked Mayfield’s final game against the Red Raiders. Before OU knocked off TTU 49-27, Mayfield, who threw for 281 yards and four touchdowns, wore a shirt appropriate for the occasion.

You see, Texas Tech fans wore that shirt when Mayfield and the Sooners traveled to Lubbock last fall. Mayfield hasn’t forgotten.

Mayfield’s exit from Texas Tech was pretty bumpy.

Mayfield ascended to the top of the depth chart and started some games as a walk-on true freshman in 2013, but decided to transfer after the season. Mayfield, who split playing time with Davis Webb after an injury, said TTU did not offer him a scholarship despite his success on the field (TTU coach Kliff Kingsbury has said the program planned to put him on scholarship).

From there, Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma. Transferring to another conference school always gets messy, and that was the case for Mayfield. He initially lost a year of eligibility per a Big 12 rule but eventually was put on scholarship. Later the Big 12 tweaked its rule and Mayfield, because he was not on scholarship at TTU, had his last year of eligibility restored.

Mayfield sat out his first year at OU in 2014, but won the starting QB job in 2015. Now, in 2017, he’s in his third year as the Sooners’ starter and has put up huge numbers. Entering Saturday night’s game, Mayfield has thrown for 10,012 yards and 95 touchdowns for the Sooners.

He has torched his former team, too, especially in 2016. In a 66-59 win, Mayfield threw for 545 yards and seven touchdowns.
