Baker Mayfield talks new OC Dave Canales, Bucs’ weapons and more on podcast

New Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is getting settled into his new home, and he’s already got plenty to be excited about as his journey continues in Tampa Bay.

Mayfield appeared on the Bucs’ team podcast Salty Dogs on Monday, where he discussed everything from his decision-making process in coming to Tampa Bay to his experience playing for the Rams after signing with the team days before.

He seemed to be particularly impressed with coaches Todd Bowles and Dave Canales, who he’ll have the opportunity to play under in Tampa Bay.

“I respect Coach Bowles quite a bit, and I’ve heard nothing but good things about Dave Canales… I’ve had a few coaches that were similar philosophy-wise,” Mayfield said on the podcast.

On top of that, he also had much to say on the weapons he’ll get to throw to. Mayfield will have players like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on offense, and it seems he’s looking forward to the opportunity to work with them this offseason and beyond.

“They’re just straight dogs, how they play the game,” Mayfield said. “They play physical, they’re very, very smart, they have a lot of experience. I’m very excited to work with them.”

The signal caller also revealed an interesting tidbit — that Dave Canales’ offense could be run-oriented, which would be a significant departure from Tampa Bay’s offense from the last few years under coach Bruce Arians and coordinator Byron Leftwich.

“You have to be able to run the ball to win in this league, to sustain success,” Mayfield said. “For me, it’s very important. And when you want to have your play-action game, it’s gotta marry up with that.”

Mayfield is set to compete with quarterback Kyle Trask in training camp, and the winner of that battle will take over Tom Brady’s position as the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback when the new era arrives in late 2023.
