Baker Mayfield to do community service, take alcohol education courses
Baker Mayfield’s punishment from Oklahoma regarding his February arrest includes community service and alcohol education classes.
The Heisman-finalist quarterback was arrested early Feb. 25 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for disorderly conduct, public intoxication and fleeing and resisting arrest. Dash cam video from the arrest released in March showed Mayfield being tackled by police as he tried to run away.
Mayfield’s internal punishment from the school involves 35 hours of community service. He told authorities he had tried to break up a fight, but when he was asked to stay he didn’t comply with those orders. An attorney for the quarterback entered a not guilty plea in April to the misdemeanor charges.
“As I stated earlier, I could not be more disappointed in my actions and the embarrassment they caused for my university and team,” Mayfield said in a statement from the school. “I am anxious to fulfill the responsibilities that have been set and am continuing to dedicate myself to the high standard that everyone rightfully expects from someone in my position.”
Mayfield returns for his senior season as a preseason Heisman favorite along with USC quarterback Sam Darnold.
“Baker has expressed regret for his actions and backed up his apology by being a model leader in our program,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said. “He has learned from his mistake and will continue to grow from it. The coaching staff and team has every confidence in him going forward.”
