Chase Young has played just two games in the NFL, but in that time he's already become a name that opposing teams are focusing on prior to a matchup with Washington.
So as the Cleveland Browns prepare for their Week 3 bout, quarterback Baker Mayfield knows that containing the No. 2 overall pick will be key. Based on what he's seen so far, the hype surrounding Young is well-deserved.
"Obviously, Chase Young, a high draft pick, but he is playing like it," Mayfield said on Wednesday to the media. "He is proving why they chose him so high."
Tied for the league-lead in sacks through two weeks, Young has been a constant menace for opposing offensive lines. He may be a rookie, but he's not playing like one.
Though the attention is on Young, Mayfield also understands that the defensive end is not the only member of Washington's unit that can impact the game. With a defensive line full of talent, it's not just Young Cleveland needs to worry about.
"They have guys all around. It is not just him," Mayfield said. "We have to find completions, get the ball out, establish the run game and not let them be the game wreckers."
Looking at Washington's first two weeks, Mayfield's eyes were drawn to Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray's performance in Week 2. Murray was able to minimize the defensive line's prowess by getting the ball out in a rapid manner and using his mobility.
Mayfield can escape the pocket as well, and he has plenty of options in the passing game. That has shown the quarterback that a similar recipe could make things easier for the offense.
"They had a really good game that first game. This weekend, (Cardinals QB) Kyler (Murray) got away from a couple just with his quickness and getting the ball out quickly," Mayfield said. "We have to approach it with the idea and the mindset of not letting them affect the game too much."
While the Browns use Murray's success as a way to prepare, Washington's defense will likely do the same. That tape will show them what they can't do in Week 3.
Against Cleveland, Washington's chances of winning will largely be impacted by the play up front, something that will continue to be a theme in 2020.
