Badgers hire Rhode Island DC as senior defensive analyst

MADISON – Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell continues to bolster his staff as he prepares for the 2023 college football season.

UW has added Jack Cooper as senior defensive analyst.

Cooper has been the defensive coordinator at Rhode Island, an FCS program that competes in the Colonial Athletic Association, for the last three seasons.

The addition of Cooper gives UW one analyst for offense, defense and special teams; two graduate assistants for the offense; one graduate assistant for the defense; and a quality control coach for the offense.

Those staffers are in addition to the 10 full-time assistants.

Cooper does have Big Ten experience. He was a quality control coach on defense at Nebraska in 2018 and 2019.

Rhode Island played only three games in the COVID-affected 2020 season and finished 2-1. The Rams finished 4-4 in the league and 7-4 overall in 2021 and 5-3 in the league and 7-4 overall last season.

The Rams in 2021 finished in the top 50 nationally in several key categories, including points per game (49th at 25.4 ppg). They finished 53rd in scoring defense last season (26.6 ppg).
