There wasn't quite as much trade activity as expected here, as names like J.D. Martinez, Ian Happ, Bryan Reynolds and Ramón Laureano stayed put, but there was that little Juan Soto deal that made the Padres a tad better. Soto gets a boost from the lineup switch, even if he's going to a tougher ballpark for hitters. Also moving up is Jose Siri, who replaced Kevin Kiermaier in Tampa Bay. Batting average will be a major issue there, but he should help some in homers and steals.
I didn't have anyone from Cleveland's Nolan Jones-Will Benson-Will Brennan trio listed last month, because I just wasn't at all clear on who might get the first shot. It turned out to be Jones, the best prospect of the bunch, and he was terrific initially, but now he's taken a backseat of late. Benson just joined him in the majors after hitting an impressive .279/.426/.522 in 89 games in Triple-A, and now it's again hard to say how things will shake out. Óscar González seems poised to play pretty regularly, but the Guardians will still have a lineup spot for Jones or Benson after sending Franmil Reyes to Triple-A. Far too often, though, it seems it will go to Owen Miller, who has a sub-.600 OPS since the beginning of May. Both Jones and Benson would be interesting with regular playing time.
Things seemed to be trending up for Kris Bryant, but plantar fasciitis forced him to the injured list on Monday and could ruin his final two months. As a result, Randal Grichuk has moved back up in the rankings. Third baseman Elehuris Montero also seems to be in line for an extended look and could be a sleeper.
I was a little confused as to why the Rays demoted Josh Lowe when he hit .321/.397/.464 over his final 17 games for the team. He wasn't going to keep that up, but he did seem like a better bet than Luke Raley or Roman Quinn going forward.
