August 7 declared ‘Sue Bird Day’ in Seattle

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell issued a proclamation Sunday declaring Aug. 7 “Sue Bird Day,” in honor of the legendary Seattle Storm player’s 21-year career and her final regular-season home game.

“Sue Bird set a new example for what it means to be an athlete and a leader — becoming a fixture not just in the record books, but also in our communities,” said Harrell. “Sue’s talent, work ethic, and commitment to teamwork inspire so many Seattle neighbors and fans across the country and globe. She exemplifies the dedication to excellence and partnership that we strive to build in One Seattle. Congratulations to Sue on a fantastic career. Good luck in these final games with the playoffs on the horizon — and go Storm!”

Bird has played for the Storm for her entire career, being a part of the franchise for 21 of its 23 years of existence.

She will finish her WNBA career as one of the most decorated players of all time and as the only player in league history to win a championship in three different decades.

The proclamation also notes Bird’s advocacy work, including her work on LGBTQ+ and racial equity initiatives in Seattle and across the country.

The largest crowd in Storm history of more than 18,000 fans is expected at Climate Pledge Arena for her final regular season game on Sunday.
