Auburn softball’s RPI, postseason outlook ahead of Mississippi State series

The final regular season series of the season is upon us, which means that the postseason picture is beginning to truly take shape.

As for the No. 17 Auburn Tigers, they are in great shape to earn a favorable postseason bid, with plenty of opportunities to boost their resume.

Ahead of this weekend’s final SEC series, Auburn is currently in 4th place in the SEC standings, with a chance to climb to the No. 3 spot by the weekend’s end. D1Softball appears to be in favor of Auburn’s chances to increase its stock in the NCAA Tournament seeding, which means that they could potentially host a regional.

Ahead of the final SEC series of the season, here’s a look at where Auburn ranks in the RPI, as well as their projected NCAA Regional destination.

Overall Ranking: No. 19

Auburn remains in the top 20 of the RPI ahead of the final SEC series. The Tigers are the sixth-highest ranked team in the SEC, trailing LSU, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia.

Strength of Schedule: No. 19

Playing in the SEC provides a challenge week in and week out. Out of the 13 teams within the conference, 11 of those teams have a strength of schedule within the top 25, and every program as a strength of schedule in the top 40.


Home record: 24-3

Auburn boasts an impressive 24-3 record at home, with two of Auburn’s losses coming against SEC foes LSU and Ole Miss.

Record against tier-two teams: 11-3

Auburn has played 14 games against teams ranked No. 26-50 in the RPI, and has lost to only Ole Miss, South Carolina, and South Alabama. The Tigers host Mississippi State this weekend, who checks in at No. 46 ahead of the weekend.

Auburn is currently out of the hosting window, but D1Softball believes that Auburn could build its resume between now and selection Sunday, and sneak in as a regional host. Currently, D1Softball has Auburn traveling to Seattle for the regionals.
