Athletics 'Stars Wars' themed fireworks show started a fire in Oakland

An Oakland Athletics spokesperson says that a “Star Wars” themed fireworks show at Oakland Coliseum Friday night helped spark a one-alarm fire near the stadium.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the fire was reported at 10:41 p.m. at ABC Supply Co., a roofing company that’s located near the stadium. The call came at the conclusion of the Athletics fireworks show, which followed their 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Oakland Fire Department has yet to conclude its investigation. Battalion Chief James Bowron only told the San Francisco Chronicle Saturday that “we’re not ruling anything out.”

According to NBC Bay Area, Athletics communication director Catherine Aker was willing to acknowledge that the fire was “related” to the postgame fireworks show that emanated from the outfield grass.

There were no injuries reported and no damage to any other nearby structures. The fire did cause several logistical issues. The pedestrian bridge leading to BART was temporarily closed, which led to long transportation delays.

The Athletics say 22,691 fans attended the baseball game Friday night. Thousands more were just leaving a Paul Simon concert at the Oracle Arena, which is separated from the ballpark by a small plaza.

Several fans captured video of the blaze as they were leaving both venues.

The fire will not have any impact on Saturday’s sporting events in Oakland. The Athletics were back in action Saturday afternoon, once again hosting Arizona. Later in the day, Oracle Arena will be rocking again when the Golden State Warriors host the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the NBA’s Western Conference Finals.
