A's could have temporary home at Triple-A park in Vegas originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
The Athletics’ future home remains uncertain past 2024, and there’s a possibility the team will play in Las Vegas even before a new stadium is built in Southern Nevada.
A’s president Dave Kaval, who has been at the forefront of bringing a new stadium to the waterfront property at Howard Terminal, told The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Mick Akers there’s an option the A’s temporarily could play at the facility that currently hosts the team’s Triple-A affiliate. That is, before this other ballpark is built.
“That’s something we’re exploring as a possibility, because it’s hard to know how long these things are going to take,” said A’s president Dave Kaval. “We would have to understand all the different options and when things could occur. But since there is such a state-of-the-art facility already there, it’s at least an option.”
Essentially, it would be similar to what the Toronto Blue Jays did, having their home games be at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, New York -- where the team plays during spring training. The Blue Jays couldn’t play in Canada last season or this season due to coronavirus travel restrictions.
MLB recently gave the A's their blessing to explore relocation possibilities, which put pressure on local government regarding the waterfront ballpark project.
Las Vegas Ballpark being the future home of the A’s already has one of its own in favor of the area. Oakland outfielder Skye Bolt told Akers he doesn’t believe anyone would have a problem with it, especially due to the fact that the stadium plays like Coors Field as a batter’s haven. The mixture of altitude and heat makes the balls fly.
Kaval told NBC Sports California back in May if this ballpark isn’t built in Oakland at Jack London Square, the team will be out of options to keep the team in the area. The current lease for the A’s playing at the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024.
On July 20, the City Council's agenda will include a discussion to explore the request for the ballpark. That is the next step of the process.
