Feb. 4—The votes are in. Corbin Ragle of the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher boys' wrestling team and Isabelle Leyhe of the Mahomet-Seymour girls' wrestling team are this week's winners. Here they are, in their own words, with their biggest supporters — their teammates:
Corbin Ragle — Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher boys' wrestling
Why he's Athlete of the Week: Ragle won the 144-pound weight class at last Saturday's Heart of Illinois Conference Duals with a 4-2 decision against LeRoy/Tri-Valley's Brock Owens in the championship. Ragle was one of five GCMS/Fisher wrestlers to earn an individual conference title, helping the Falcons win the eight-team event.
From Ragle: "I think it's pretty cool to get my name out there. We're doing pretty good as a team, and I'm happy to get my team's name out there. ... We knew (the conference meet) would be tough. We were going up against LeRoy, which we lost to in a dual earlier, but we didn't have all of our wrestlers. We knew it was going to be tough, but we wanted it really bad, so we went and got it."
A movie I could watch over and over is ... "The Campaign" with Will Ferrell.
My favorite music genre/artist is ... rock. I usually like listening to AC/DC.
If I could have any superpower, it would be ... teleportation just to teleport to a happy place like a golf course on a nice, sunny day.
Something that's on my bucket list is ... I'd like to go skydiving. That's a big one. For some reason, I've always wanted to wrestle an alligator.
My biggest pet peeve is ... when people are on their phones and run into me.
My favorite wrestling memory is ... we always go on a camp with the whole wrestling team during the summer to Wartburg College in Iowa. We always have a really good time there, and it's nice to spend some time with the team.
My favorite athlete is ... Austin DeSanto.
Before a match ... I like to tell myself that I put in the work in the offseason. I have people, family and friends, who help me get ready to wrestle. I just like to tell myself that I work harder than my opponent and I'm going to give them a hard match.
After a match ... I just like to think about what's next.
In five years ... I would just like to look back and know I worked hard and had fun. My main goal is I just want to have fun. I just want to enjoy life.
Athlete of the Week finalists: Garren Barker, Champaign Central swimming; Aidyn Beck, Champaign Central basketball; JaVaughn Robinson, Danville basketball.
Isabelle Leyhe — Mahomet-Seymour girls' wrestling
Why she's Athlete of the Week: Leyhe won an individual title at 120 pounds in last Saturday's IHSA girls' wrestling regional. Fellow Bulldog Jaycee Fancher also won her weight class, helping M-S to a second-place finish in the 37-team event. Leyhe won her championship match with a pin against Charleston's Morgan Krone-Smallhorn in 1 minute, 50 seconds.
From Leyhe: "It's really exciting to see all the support I have behind me. It makes me feel really supported, just knowing everybody has my back by doing the smallest thing to let me know they're there for me. ... (The regional) was amazing. It's definitely a moment I'll remember for the rest of my life. I hope the rest of the girls hold that memory in such a fond place that I do. Saturday was a day I'll cherish for a long time. It was amazing to see all the girls put everything they've learned and worked toward out there. We really are a team. Those girls are some of the closest girls to me, and I was thrilled to be able to share that day with them."
A TV show I could watch over and over is ... "Suits."
My favorite music genre is ... rap, and my favorite artist is J. Cole.
If I could have any superpower, it would be ... invisibility.
Something that's on my bucket list is ... I want to go to Australia, and I want to go skydiving.
My biggest pet peeve is ... when people walk with their shoelaces untied. It drives me crazy. Just tie them.
My favorite wrestling memory is ... placing at dual team state my sophomore year. That was definitely one of my favorites, but it's really hard to pick one favorite.
My favorite sports team is ... the St. Louis Cardinals.
Before a match ... I get my headphones on and get my music playing. I like to jump and dance around and kind of mess around a little bit. I'll warm up with some of my teammates and just get my blood flowing but try to keep the mood and energy up.
After a match ... I'm trying to get everyone to pack up faster so we can get out of there.
In five years ... I can see myself in law school, hopefully. I want to be able to say I made the best out of what people say will be the best years of my life. I want to say I didn't miss any opportunities. I don't want to have any "Man, I wish I did that" moments.
Athlete of the Week finalists: Addison Lucht, Cissna Park basketball; ILyana Nambo, Iroquois West basketball; Raegen Stringer, Unity basketball.
