The race promotes a new discipline of foil cycling

which allows cyclists to 'fly on water' aboard pedal-powered boats

The boats were created by Annecy-based startup JetCycle

(SOUNDBITE) (French) JETCYCLE CEO, NICOLAS PICARD, SAYING:

"The Jetcycle is a pedal-powered vehicle, with a pedalling system that resembles the concept of boat cycling while lying down, and we added - and this is what our innovation is - foils in front and at the back. We have a propulsion system that is trademarked and that allows us, by pedalling at a certain speed of around 9 kilometers per hour, to activate a small flight controller, just like in a plane, to fly on water by using the foils."
