Astros place 2B Altuve (knee) on DL

The Houston Astros have placed star second baseman Jose Altuve on the 10-day disabled list for the first time in his eight-year career with right knee soreness.

Altuve has missed the team's last two games, including a 7-3 loss to the rival Texas Rangers on Saturday, as a result of the injury. Manager A.J. Hinch announced the move following the game.

His DL placement will be retroactive to Thursday, and Houston will announce a corresponding move on Sunday.

Altuve, the reigning American League MVP, exited the Astros' game against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday in the fifth inning with knee discomfort, which had been a lingering issue for the 28-year-old. Altuve told reporters he met with team doctors on Saturday, which led to the roster decision.

"Basic things, like walking and to go down the stairs, it feels good," Altuve said. "I haven't done anything more than that. Like I said, the doctor came, checked on me, and he said it was better to [go on the DL].

"If they think it's better to go on the DL for the team and for me, in order to come back healthy and strong, we've got to go there and do it."

Altuve is hitting .329 with nine home runs, 46 RBIs and 14 stolen bases this season. He was named an All-Star for the fifth consecutive year earlier this month.

The Astros have been without shortstop Carlos Correa for month as the result of back stiffness. While Correa has been sidelined, Alex Bregman has been shifted from third base to shortstop.

Marwin Gonzalez has played second base in Altuve's stead the last two nights.
