The World Baseball Classic claimed another MLB star on Saturday.

Days after Mets closer Edwin Diaz suffered a significant knee injury during a celebration for Puerto Rico, Astros second baseman Jose Altuve fractured his right thumb after being hit by a pitch in Venezuela's quarterfinal loss to the United States.

The Astros released an update on Altuve's status on Sunday, stating that he will undergo surgery in the upcoming days.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Altuve is expected to miss at least two months, which would signal a return coming sometime in May.

Altuve, who turns 33 in May, has been a catalyst throughout the Astros' recent run of success. He's an eight-time All-Star, three-time batting champ, two-time World Series winner and 2017 AL MVP.
