Artis Gilmore is in the Hall of Fame

Artis Gilmore has been voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The announcement came through Monday.

Gilmore usually misses the cut when hoopniks break down their personal list of the great centers of all time, which is a shame because he brought textbook defense and efficient offense to every team he played for during his 17-year pro career. Gilmore also led his 1970 Jacksonville team, unheralded before and since, to the NCAA final.

His crowning achievement was the 1975 ABA title, won with the Hubie Brown-coached Kentucky Colonels. Gilmore averaged 23 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks that season. Ho hum.

This YouTube video, featuring some stunning ABA camerawork, seems to do the trick:

This wildly entertaining video featuring Gilmore as a Chicago Bull with Reggie Theus and David Greenwood is also worth a watch, as they match up against Kareem, Magic and the young Los Angeles Lakers.

Congrats, A-Train.
