Around the Big Ten: FIU’s Sione Finau registering significant Big Ten interest in transfer portal

Sione Finau entered the transfer portal last week, the FIU offensive lineman with a strong resume and now plenty of ‘Power Five’ interest.

With three years as a starter at FIU, Finau has three years with which to play two seasons (the COVID-19 season gives him an extra year of eligibility). In 2019, he was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team. Not surprisingly, interest is coming in steadily for the experienced guard.

“So far I have had visits with Maryland and Nebraska coaches and a couple more in the coming days,” Finau said in an interview on Wednesday night.

“I’m set to meet with Houston, Purdue and Indiana for right now.”

He said that Maryland, Purdue and Houston will all likely get a visit in the coming weeks.

Entering the portal, he admits, is a gamble, but right now he is enjoying the process and how it is playing out. Coaches are still reaching out, he says, with offers coming in.

“I’m looking for somewhere that has a strong foundation with structure and a place that has a sense of culture and tradition. My major is business so it is also important to me that the school also has a good business program,” Finau said.

“I would also like to be somewhere that has a great environment in terms of the area and the people and ultimately ending somewhere where it feels right.”
