Mel Tucker is set to get paid, and Colin Cowherd sees this as a signal of intent from Michigan State.
The Spartans are enjoying a strong second season under Tucker, leading to reports of a massive new contract that will make the Michigan State head coach one of the highest-paid in all of college football. FoxSports personality Colin Cowherd, never shy with his opinions, looked at this as a big picture from Michigan State.
He sees the Spartans getting ready to take a leap and challenge the big teams in the Big Ten and nationally.
“Michigan State now, as we reported this past weekend – wants to go from a Tier II program – somewhere between, you know, the twelfth best and the twenty-fifth best program – they want to get in the top 12. They are offering and now confirmed by the Detroit Free Press – as we told you this weekend – in the $9-$10 million range for Mel Tucker as head coach,” Cowherd said via ‘The Volume.’
“He also will have a big say in facilities. I think it’s the right move. Michigan State is going to challenge Michigan now because I think Mel Tucker is that kind of coach.”
Cowherd likened this move by Michigan State as similar to what Oregon did on the football field a few years ago, making a bigtime pledge to becoming a national powerhouse.
“Michigan State is now making that kind of financial commitment, they’re all in,” Cowherd said. “I love college football, I love Mel Tucker. I’m good at it.”
Michigan State is 9-1 (6-1 Big Ten) and is coming off a 40-21 win over Maryland this past weekend.
