Arnold Schwarzenegger Just Revealed He's Recovering from Heart Surgery

From Men's Health

Arnold Schwarzenegger just revealed he’s recovering from heart surgery, much to surprise of fans. Taking to social media, the 73-year-old actor, retired bodybuilder, and former governor of California shared he recently had open heart surgery to get a “new aortic valve.” Schwarzenegger was born with a congenital heart defect, and underwent pulmonic valve replacement in 1997 and 2018. The condition runs in Schwarzenegger's family, as both his mother and maternal grandmother had heart issues, according to USA Today.

On Oct. 23, Schwarzenegger posted an Instagram picture flashing a thumbs up from a hospital bed with a red heart pillow resting near him. Accompanying that picture were three more shots of Schwarzenegger posing with various Cleveland-area statues, including sculptures of Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.

“Thanks to the team at the Cleveland Clinic, I have a new aortic valve to go along with my new pulmonary valve from my last surgery,” Schwarzenegger wrote in the Instagram caption. “I feel fantastic and have already been walking the streets of Cleveland enjoying your amazing statues. Thank you to every doc and nurse on my team!”

The aortic valve “helps keeps blood flowing in the correct direction through the heart,” according to Mayo Clinic. When not working properly, it can interfere with proper blood flow and put strain on the heart.

Though it’s unclear when Schwarzenegger had heart surgery, he is obviously out-and-about in Ohio, which is a good sign for a full, speedy recovery. But would you expect any less? After all, The Terminator always comes back.
