Arizona's Patrick Corbin loses no-hit bid on check-swing infield single in 8th inning
Patrick Corbin’s brilliant start to the 2018 season almost got an exclamation point on Tuesday.
Entering an NL West matchup with the San Francisco Giants, Corbin was 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 29 strikeouts and four walks through three starts.
Through 7.2 innings against the Giants Tuesday, Corbin had allowed zero hits and one walk.
Then Giants first baseman Brandon Belt took the batter’s box. He got fooled by a Corbin breaking ball and checked his swing over the plate. His bat made contact, and the ball dribbled toward a third base left uncovered due to a Diamondbacks shift.
Daniel Descalso got to the ball and made a throw to first, but Belt beat it out to spoil the no-hit bid.
All was not lost for Corbin, though. He got through the inning, and the Diamondbacks scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, which ended up being the difference in a 1-0 Arizona win.
Corbin improved to 3-0 and now has a 1.65 ERA with 37 strikeouts and five walks through four starts, while the Diamondbacks improved to 12-4 to maintain first place in the NL West.
