The ASU softball team is the No. 8 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

According to many fans and media members, it should be higher.

The Sun Devils, who won the Pac-12 Conference and are ranked as high as No. 4 in a poll, managed to just be ranked No. 8 by the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Interestingly, UCLA, which finished second in the Pac-12, earned the No. 5 national seed.

Writers weigh in on Arizona State's seed

ASU fans weren't alone in their criticism of the Sun Devils' seed.

Three of D1softball.com's four experts put down Arizona State as the team that most deserved a better seed in the tournament.

Three of the four also put down ASU's Tempe Regional (which also included LSU, San Diego State and Cal State Fullerton) as the hardest regional in the softball tournament.

Why is ASU ranked so low?

The Sun Devils have an RPI of 10th in the nation, according to ncaa.com. The RPI (ratings percentage index) ranks teams based on their wins and losses and their strength of schedule.

The RPI evidently didn't like ASU's strength of schedule, even though the Sun Devils went 20-4 in Pac-12 Conference play.

Some polls don't agree. D1softball.com has ASU ranked No. 5 in the country. ESPN has Arizona State at No. 4.

Will the slight in seeding matter for the Sun Devils?

If it were to advance to the Super Regional, the Sun Devils would host as the No. 8 national seed.

The winner of the regional with No. 9 Northwestern, Oakland, McNeese and Notre Dame is scheduled to face the winner of the Arizona State's regional in that Super Regional, with the winner of the Super Regional earning one of the eight Women's College World Series berths.

Three of D1softball.com's four experts picked ASU to be among the Women's College World Series field, even with the Sun Devils getting the No. 8 seed.
