Area volleyball roundup for Aug. 31: Burke moves to 3-0 with win over Wildkats

Sep. 1—BURKE, S.D. — After dropping the first set to Kimball/White Lake on Thursday evening, Burke rattled off three-straight set wins to defeat the Wildcats 20-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-21 and improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Cougars were lifted by junior Kailee Frank, who notched 14 kills, six aces and 14 digs en route to victory. Paige Bull added eight kills and two blocks, Emmie Hausmann notched five kills and 12 digs, and Ava Sargent contributed 15 assists and three aces.

Ten kills, 12 digs and 14 assists from Ryann Nielsen fueled KWL, alongside Harley Namanny's 10 digs, nine kills and 11 assists. Madison Meier had 28 digs, Elena Brennan had three blocks and Lindy Keihn served two aces.

Burke will compete in the Gregory Invitational on Saturday, and KWL has a week off before visiting Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Here's a look at top performers from Thursday night:

* Courtney Sees had 17 kills and nine digs for Avon, leading the Pirates to a 3-0 win over Andes Central/Dakota Christian. Jordyn Voigt added 11 digs, and Avon improves to 3-2 on the season.

* Freeman outlasted Howard in five sets, totaling a combined 46 kills in the process. Ashlin Jacobsen had 15 kills to go along with 17 digs, Zoe Butler had 11 kills and 20 digs and Ella Waltner had 11 kills and 14 digs.

* Joslynn Fischer tallied 20 assists, 10 digs and four kills in a three-set sweep for Menno over Freeman Academy/Marion, while Ashton Massey had nine kills.

* Canistota won on the road in three sets over Scotland, powered by Sierra McGregor's eight kills and eight digs. Natalie Becker had 32 digs for the Hawks.

* McCook Central/Montrose's Kayla Vander Woude had 13 kills to lead the Fighting Cougars to a five-set win over Parker. Maddy Lauck had 33 set assists and Lexie Lunders had 24 digs for MCM. Halle Berens had a match-high 25 kills for the Pheasants.

* In Platte-Geddes' three-set sweep of Colome, Karly VanDerWerff had 11 kills, eight digs and four aces. Westlie Cahoy had 16 digs for the Cowgirls.

* Centerville defeated Corsica-Stickney in a three-set sweep, with 11 kills from Thea Gust. Cali Vanden Hoek had a match-high 17 digs for the Jaguars.

* Ava Lingemann had six aces, 14 kills and 11 digs for Ethan in a 3-0 sweep of Sanborn Central/Woonsocket, and Claire Mellegaard had five aces. The Rustlers' Maddy Bartscher had 23 assists, while Liz Boschee had eight kills for SCW.

* Winner outpaced Valentine (Neb.) in its three-set sweep of the Badgers, propelled by 14 kills and 15 digs from Keelie Kuil and 16 assists from Lexi Klein.
