Area Notebook: KMS baseball, LQPV softball earns most All-Camden Conference honors

Jun. 17—The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg baseball team and the Lac qui Parle Valley softball team walked away with most All-Camden Conference honors this spring.

The teams were announced Wednesday.

In baseball, KMS had five players honored: Alex Call, Isaac Call, Wylee Lottman, Brody Forsell and Isaac Rudningen. Jared Cortez was an honorable-mention. The Fighting Saints won the Camden with a 10-0 record. Alex Call, a junior, was named the conference's most valuable player. He's a University of Arizona baseball recruit.

MACCRAY's Nathan Hebrink was named the conference's baseball coach of the year.

In softball, LQPV had five players on the all-conference team: Rylee Sawtazky, Taylor Shelstad, Macie Lund, Cassidie Olson and Tori Bungarden. Rylee Lund was an honorable-mention. The Eagles won the conference with a 16-2 record and Sawtazky was named the Camden's most valuable player.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton's Darren Baartman was named the Camden's coach of the year.

WarHawk signs

Willmar WarHawk forward Ethan Light has signed to continue his hockey career with the University of Utah club team.

Light, who was born in Manhattan Beach, California, played 40 NA3HL games with the WarHawks in 2020-21, including five games in the Fraser Cup Playoffs. In 35 regular-season games, he had six goals and 11 assists, recording two game-winning goals. He had 57 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he had one goal and six penalty minutes.

Utah is a Division I program in the American College Hockey Association.

"Ethan will be a huge addition to the program," Utah head coach Morgan Feenie said in a statement. "We are now fortunate to have both Ethan and his brother Wyatt together on the team."

Light spent one year with Willmar after playing for the Los Angeles Junior Kings.

"After my one year of juniors, I will be joining the University of Utah as a freshman, and I am extremely excited to do great things for this team," Light said in a statement.

BOLD coach gets an ace

BOLD head baseball and girls basketball coach Brian Kingery had a notable achievement on the golf course Tuesday night. Kingery recorded an ace at the Olivia Golf Club.

Using a 9-iron, Kingery shot a hole-in-one at the 140-yard No. 5 hole. Kingery's shot landed just past the pin and spun back in the cup. It was Kingery's second career hole in one. His other came about 15 years ago on hole No. 3 at Hawk Creek Country Club in Raymond.

Witnesses were Curt Weis, Matt Hennen, Brett Neubauer and Jon Eiler.

Famous face at Pro-Am

The 2021 KWLM Pro-Am golf tournament took place Monday at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Willmar. The four-person team that won the event included Star Tribune sports columnist Jim Souhan.

Souhan, Don Berry, Stephen Stuhr and Mark Stuhr shot a 125 total, which was 19-under par.
