Area basketball roundup for Jan. 2: Parkston boys hold off Hanson comeback attempt for home win

Jan. 2—PARKSTON, S.D. — The Parkston boys basketball team held on at home Tuesday night, defeating Hanson 58-54.

An 18-8 first-quarter margin helped the Trojans build a 17-point halftime lead. The Beavers were nearly able to come back, outscoring Parkston 35-22 in the second half. Hanson also nearly took advantage of the Trojans shooting only 44% from the free throw line for the game.

Parkston was able to shoot 50% from the field and out rebounded Hanson 30-25. Luke Bormann led the Trojans scoring with 22 points. Will Jodozi finished with 15 points while leading the team with eight rebounds. Payton Koehn had seven points and five rebounds.

A trio of Hanson players scored double-digit points, led by AJ Wilber's 18 points. Jayce Slaba finished with 17 points, and Ben Wilber had 13 points and five rebounds. Sutton Dewald also grabbed five boards.

Parkston (6-1) will be back in action Friday, Jan. 5, taking on Vermillion at home. Hanson (4-2) heads back on the road Thursday, Jan. 4, visiting Viborg-Hurley.

* Tripp-Delmont/Armour outscored Kimball/White Lake 32-10 in the first half en route to a 45-37 win in Armour. Isaac Wunder and Riley Spaans each scored 13 points, while Mason Reiner had seven points and six assists. Blake Leiferman had a near double-double for KWL with eight points and nine rebounds, and Park Sinclair added eight points.

* Tage Ortman's 29 points paced Canistota to a 57-44 win over Elk Points-Jefferson. The Hawks also got 13-point efforts from Brady Scott and Brandon Kjetland, and Levi Schroeder had four assists. Evan Fornia's 13 points led EPJ.

* Chopin Cooper had 13 points and seven rebounds, but Bon Homme fell to Parker 47-38 in Tyndall. Easton Mudder added nine points and three rebounds, and Jace Toupal had eight points. Ray Travnicek had a game-high 13 points for Parker, and Myles Meyer had 12 points.

* Five Tigers notched double digits, and Howard routed Menno 76-25 for its sixth-straight win. Luke Koepsell scored 19 points, Carson Hinker had 13 points, Taiden Hoyer had 11 points and Colby Claussen and Kolt Koepsell each added 10 points. For Menno, Adam Munkvold tabbed 10 points and Isaac Fergen had eight points.

* Andes Central/Dakota Christian defeated Gregory 64-30 in Lake Andes. Josie Brouwer had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Gabriella Olson had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, while Mahpiya Irving added 10 points for the Thunder. Dani VanDerWerff had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Gorillas.

* Powered by a 15-2 fourth quarter, Kimball/White Lake won at Tripp-Delmont/Armour with a 51-38 result at Armour. Harley Namanny had 25 points and Ryann Nielsen had 15 points for the Wildkats. Kinley Spaans had 15 points and seven rebounds for TDA.

* Bon Homme improved to 5-1 on the season with a home win over Irene-Wakonda 71-27. Erin Heusinkveld had 21 points, with 16 points for Jurni Vavruska, six assists and five steals for the Cavaliers, who also picked up 14 points and 11 rebounds from Olivia Bures.

* Winner outscored Chamberlain 31-6 in the first half on the way to a 58-17 win. Cici Watson had 11 points for the Warriors, who had eight points from Cora Moss, as well. The homesteading Cubs shot 22% in the loss.

* Parkston won a battle of unbeatens and improved to 7-0 with a 61-41 home win over Hanson. Lauren Ziebart and Keeara Oakley each scored 13 points, with 10 points each from Mya Thuringer and Berkley Ziebart. Alyssa Moschell had a game-high 19 points for the Beavers, who were held to 27% shooting.

* Howard picked up a road victory on Tuesday 64-27 at Menno. Abby Aslesen had 30 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals, while Ann Connor had 12 points and six rebounds. Zoe Schaeffer had eight points for Menno.

* Oldham-Ramona-Rutland defeated Freeman Academy/Marion 41-24 in Freeman. Alivia Bickett had a game-high 19 points for ORR and Julia Trygstad scored 15 points. Karley Luke had seven points for the Bearcats, while Estelle Waltner scored six points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

* Lennox upended Mount Vernon/Plankinton at home 65-58. Carli Kuyper powered the Orioles with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Andie Peters had 18 points as well. Emilee Fox had 15 points for the Titans and Reagan Rus tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.
