Area basketball roundup for Feb. 3: Fliers, Falcons girls pick up wins at the Corn Palace

Feb. 3—MITCHELL — Class A No. 2 Flandreau remained unbeaten, pulling ahead early and keeping Class B No. 2 Centerville at arm's length in a 58-43 girls basketball victory on Saturday night at the Corn Palace.

Saturday's ranked matchup was the second of two contests originally slated as part of the Hanson Classic, which was canceled due to inclement weather.

Running their record to 15-0, Lizzie Pavlis notched a game-high 17 points with six rebounds, while South Dakota State women's basketball signee Claire Sheppard put up 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead the Fliers. Flandreau also got 13 points from Morgan Sheppard along with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists from Lily Klein.

Emma Marshall recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double for Centerville (12-2), as Keira Austin chipped in nine points and Thea Gust had seven points.

Both teams are in action again on Monday, with Flandreau visiting Garretson while Centerville hosts Irene-Wakonda.

MITCHELL — In a battle of top-15 teams in the Class A standings, Florence/Henry withstood a late run from Hanson to take a 47-45 win on Saturday evening at the Corn Palace.

Taylor Watson poured in a game-best 22 points as the lone Falcon to reach double figures, as Reese Schmidt contributed nine points and Ashlynn Vavruska had seven points. Hanson held all-state center Caylin Kelly to three points.

For the Beavers (11-4), Eliza Oltmanns finished with 15 points and six rebounds, and Kylie Haiar scored 10 points. Alyssa Moschell chipped in nine points and six rebounds, while Taziah Hawkins had nine points and four assists.

Both programs return to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 6, as Florence/Henry (14-3) visits Castlewood and Hanson plays host to Freeman.

* Wessington Springs allowed only eight points to Tripp-Delmont/Armour in the first half on the way to a 57-28 win at Armour. Avery Orth had 26 points and Carissa Scheel had 11 points for the Spartans, who are now 13-3. Mia Reiner and Megan Reiner had seven points apiece for TDA.

* Bon Homme shot 63% in a road victory over Freeman, 52-48. Erin Heusinkveld had 16 points, with 13 points from Taycee Ranek and nine points and seven rebounds for Olivia Bures. Cami Fransen scored a team-high 11 points for the host Flyers.

* Wagner defeated Irene-Wakonda 66-28, powered by a 24-7 start in the first quarter. Ashlyn Koupal had 27 points and 17 rebounds, on 11-for-16 shooting. Lydia Yost had 16 points and Macy Koupal had 13 points for the Red Raiders. Mady Peterson scored 11 points for the visiting Eagles.

* Winner flew past Cheyenne-Eagle Butte for a 71-18 victory. The Warriors' Ava Craven scored 16 points, with 12 points from Karlee Brozik and 10 points for Lilly Barfuss. CEB was led by 14 points from Tiana Johnson.

* Tea Area shot nearly 60% as a team in a 79-60 win over Parkston at the Dakota XII/NEC Clash in Madison. Katie Vasecka had 25 points on 10-for-14 shooting, with 19 points from Mara Grant, as the Titans were 10-for-20 on 3-pointers. Parkston made nine 3-pointers, including four each from Gracie Oakley and Berkley Ziebart. Ziebart had a team-high 21 points, while Gracie Oakley and Keeara Oakley each scored 15 points for the Trojans.

* Lyman grinded out a victory over Herreid/Selby Area 42-25 at Highmore Action Club Classic on Saturday. Jordyn Scott had 16 points for the Raiders, while Makaylee Scott had 11 points and Skyler Volmer had eight points, nine rebounds and five assists. Lyman shot 29.4% from the field but converted seven 3-pointers.

* Class B No. 5 Wessington Springs took down a road win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour 65-53 for the Spartans' 13th win in a row. Ryder Michalek had 18 points, with 13 points from Brock Krueger and 12 points for Blake Larson for Wessington Springs. Isaac Wunder had 20 points and Riley Spaans posted 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Nighthawks.

* Freeman raced past Bon Homme 65-33 on Saturday at home, powered by a 25-7 second quarter. David Walter and Luke Peters each had 13 points, with 11 points from Tate Sorensen for the Flyers. Easton Mudder had a team-high eight points for Bon Homme.

* Winner took down Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 64-46 behind 20 points from Aiden Barfuss. Ryder Halligan had 14 points and Carter Craven had 11 points and 10 points from Shawn Hammerbeck. Dayson Kennedy had 16 points for CEB.

* Wagner cruised past Irene-Wakonda 62-27 thanks to a 24-1 opening quarter. Preston McFayden had 14 points for the Red Raiders, with 13 points from Carter Cournoyer, 12 points from Joey Cournoyer and 10 points from Parker Petry.
