Area basketball roundup for Feb. 27: Dominant start sends Hanson past MVP in Region 5A boys tourney

Feb. 27—ALEXANDRIA, S.D. — Behind a 21-1 first quarter, third-seeded Hanson cruised to a 66-43 wire-to-wire win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton in the Region 5A quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

The Beavers led 37-16 at halftime and 51-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Sutton Dewald dropped in a game-high 16 points to pace the Beavers. Jayce Slaba and A.J. Wilber each added 14 points, and Ben Wilber had 12 points in the win.

For the Titans, Zach Baker scored 14 points, as Tyce Feistner and Blaine Bohr each contributed 11 points.

Hanson (13-8) will host No. 7 seed Bon Homme in the Region 5A semifinals on Friday. MVP's season came to an end with a 6-15 record.

ETHAN, S.D. — Sixth-seeded Bridgewater-Emery raced past Region 3B No. 3 Ethan 23-8 in the fourth quarter to pick up a 55-43 boys basketball victory in the region quarterfinal round on Tuesday.

Bridgewater-Emery trailed 28-20 at halftime and 35-32 after three periods before using a 13-0 run over the first four minutes of the final period to take control of the game.

Camdyn Stoterau had 15 points, including seven points in the fourth quarter, with 12 points from Holden Wollmann, 11 points from Ben Weber and nine points for Jaxon Koch. The Huskies were 9-for-10 on free throws, as well.

The Rustlers had 14 points from Braedon Nebelsick and 13 points from Taite Klumb, with nine points from Jack Bartscher.

B-E (13-8) will take on second-seeded Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday in the region semifinals in Salem for a trip to the Class B SoDak 16. Ethan's season ends at 16-5.

HOWARD, S.D. — Region 3B top-seeded Howard pulled away in the second half for a 73-35 victory over Mitchell Christian in the boys basketball region quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Luke Koepsell had 19 points for the Tigers, while Colby Claussen logged 11 points and Logan Mentele and Kolt Koepsell each tallied nine points for the Tigers, who trailed 13-10 after the opening eight minutes but then outscored MCS 23-6 in the second quarter and 40-16 in the second half.

Aiden Lieber scored 25 points in his career finale in a Golden Eagles uniform. Syver Enga had five points, Joseph Tegethoff had three points and Silas Holdeman had two points to close out the scoring for MCS, which was playing for the second night in a row after a Monday opening-round win over Sioux Falls Lutheran.

Howard (18-3) advances to the Region 3B semifinals on Friday, March 1, taking on fifth-seeded Chester in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. in Salem. Mitchell Christian's season ends at 5-17.

* Ryder Michalek topped 1,000 points for his career, as Wessington Springs raced past Avon 62-36 in the Region 5B quarterfinals. Parker Graff paced the Spartans with 20 points, while Michalek tacked on 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Brock Krueger added nine points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

* Chapin Cooper and Jace Toupal scored 14 points apiece to lead seventh-seeded Bon Homme Past second-seeded Wagner 48-45 in the Region 5A quarterfinals. Toupal also snagged nine rebounds with two steals, and Cooper had five rebounds and two steals. Joey Cournoyer dropped 22 points with nine rebounds for Wagner in the loss.

* Jeff Boschee's 22 points, nine rebounds and three assists helped boost Sanborn Central/Woonsocket over Platte-Geddes 48-43 in the Region 5A bracket. McCoy Schulz added 15 points and six rebounds for the Blackhawks. In the loss, Tanner Dyk posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Black Panthers.

* Carter Craven recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Ryder Halligan chipped in a game-high 17 points for Winner in a 56-20 win over Todd County in the Region 7A tournament.

* Noah Bearshield's 26 points led the way for Gregory in a 76-47 win over Burke in the Region 5B quarterfinals. A pair of Gorillas notched double-doubles in the contest, as Cruz Klundt finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds alongside Daniel Mitchell with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Reed Benter scored 23 points for the Cougars in the loss.

* Isaac Wunder's 24 points and Riley Spaans' double-double powered Tripp-Delmont/Armour to a 54-38 victory over Andes Central/Dakota Christian in the Region 5B quarterfinals. Spaans had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Mason Reiner also scored 11 points. ACDC was led by Ryder Niewenhuis' 12 points.

* Parkston took down Kimball/White Lake 68-56 in the Region 5A quarterfinals behind 22 points from Brycen Bruening and Will Jodozi's double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. James Deckert finished with 17 points for the Trojans, while the Wildkats were led by Blake Leiferman's 15 points and eight rebounds.

* After jumping ahead to a 13-point first-quarter lead, Chester held off Canistota to win 42-37 in a contested Region 3B quarterfinal matchup. Layke Wold powered the Flyers with 15 points, and both Jaxton Opdahl and JD Prorok each scored 10 points. Tage Ortman led the Hawks with 16 points, but the team shot 13% from the 3-point line.

* Viborg-Hurley outscored Scotland 20-6 in the second quarter en route to a 79-29 win in the Region 4B quarterfinals in Hurley. Bryson Morrison tallied 17 points, and Braydyn Morrison scored 15 points. Owen Niederbaumer also grabbed 11 rebounds and five assists in the win. Scotland's Jase Walloch had 13 points and two steals.

* Highmore-Harrold slipped past Ipswich in the Region 6B quarterfinals on the strength of a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double that also included four blocks from Trake Cowan.

* Flandreau defeated Estelline/Hendricks 62-44 behind Luke Sheppard's 20 points and nine rebounds.

* Two-time defending champion Dakota Valley began its latest state title defense with an 87-51 win over Parker in the Region 2A bracket. Jaxson Wingert poured in 34 points, Logan Collette added 23 points and Luke Bruns notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers.

* Spencer Karstens put up 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block to help propel Gayville-Volin past Alcester-Hudson 73-71 in Region 4B tournament play. Will Pirak added 16 points, including a 3-pointer as time expired to win it for the Raiders. Dominic Van Egdom posted 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Evan Haak scored 17 points for the Cubs in the loss.

* Tiospa Zina powered past Webster in Region 1A tournament play behind four double-figure scorers, paced by 20 points and five rebounds by Carvin Fish. In the loss, Webster's Matthew Mount led all scorers with 25 points.

* West Central advanced in the Region 3A bracket with a 62-52 win over Madison, as Crew Heier recorded 27 points, seven rebounds and four steals.
