Area basketball roundup for Feb. 19: P-G storms back to down KWL in Region 5A girls tourney

Feb. 19—WHITE LAKE, S.D. — Down by as many as 14 points in the second half, ninth-seeded Platte-Geddes chipped away to take a late lead and knock off eighth-seeded Kimball/White Lake 48-45 in the opening round of the Region 5A girls basketball tournament on Monday night.

KWL led 21-6 after the first quarter, 23-15 at halftime and 36-30 entering the fourth quarter. A 9-0 run to start the final frame gave P-G its first lead of the night and was the first of five lead changes and one tie over the final five minutes.

Cadence Van Zee paced the Black Panthers with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Schrank tacked on eight points and four steals. Kori VanDerWerff scored seven points, Karly VanDerWerff grabbed seven rebounds and Hadley Hanson dished out seven assists.

For the Wildkats, Harley Namanny tossed in 21 points, as Ryann Nielsen added 16 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Summer Skluzak had seven rebounds and three assists.

Platte-Geddes (8-13) advances to play Region 5A No. 1 seed Wagner on Tuesday night in Wagner. Kimball/White Lake's season comes to an end with a 9-12 record.

* Estelle Waltner recorded 16 points, six rebounds and eight steals, while Alexa Gortmaker added 14 points, four rebounds and three steals to carry ninth-seeded Freeman Academy/Marion past Scotland 31-23 in the Region 4B tournament on Monday. Emily Dvorak contributed eight points and 15 rebounds, and Kailin Odens had eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Scotland in the loss. FAM (4-17) moves on to play top-seeded Centerville in the Region 4B tournament on Tuesday. Scotland's season ends with a record of 3-16.

* Shawn Hammerbeck put up 30 points on 14 of 19 shooting from the field and snagged 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double, leading Winner to a 69-51 victory over Crow Creek. Aiden Barfuss tacked on 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds, as Carter Craven had his own double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Crow Creek's Lance Wind Jr. and Josiah Kirkie scored 15 points and 12 points, respectively, in the loss.

* Tanner Dyk notched a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double in Platte-Geddes' 57-37 win over Todd County. Hayden Sprik added 14 points, three assists and two steals, and Braxton Breukelman chipped in eight points, 12 rebounds and one block for the Black Panthers. Drake Espinoza scored 13 points in the loss for the Falcons.

* Tyson Wentland led Corsica-Stickney to a 43-36 win at Parkston, finishing with 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Jaguars. In the loss, Payton Koehn had 10 points and six rebounds for the Trojans.

* Canistota held off Hanson on the road Monday night, led by Tage Ortman's 22 points alongside 15 points and six rebounds by Brandon Kjetland. The Beavers got 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists from Jayce Slaba in the loss.

* McCook Central/Montrose eked by Mount Vernon/Plankinton 55-52. For the Titans, Zach Baker finished with 23 points and seven rebounds, and Tyce Feistner had 16 points and five rebounds in the loss. Individual statistics for MCM were not reported.

* Viborg-Hurley cruised past Gayville Volin 76-54 behind a 39-point outing from Nick Hanson, who was 18 of 26 from the field and added seven rebounds. Nolan Kolthoff chipped in 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars, while Spencer Karstens paced the Raiders with 24 points in the loss.

* Joe Schulte poured in 28 points to guide Milbank past Madison 65-58. In the loss, Ben Brooks and Charles Callahan scored 22 points and 21 points, respectively, for Madison.
