Training camp is a grind and you won’t often see a player openly complaining about not getting enough work.
Le’Veon Bell doesn’t seem all that thrilled to be watching most of New York Jets practice. He has mostly taken the high road with the various slights thrown at him by Jets coach Adam Gase since signing with the team, but openly complained about not getting enough work in training camp on Twitter.
All the while, Gase was upset with a reporter for asking about Bell’s reps in practice. The Jets, everyone.
Le’Veon Bell not happy with practice reps
Bell’s workload in practice was a question in Jets camp, and he answered it himself on social media. It started when Eric Allen, a senior reporter from the Jets, said Bell was limited due to hamstring tightness. Bell said that was not true.
That came a few days after Gase got mad at ESPN’s Rich Cimini for asking about Bell’s practice reps.
Adam Gase not happy with question about Bell
Cimini asked a fairly innocuous question about Bell’s split with Frank Gore in training camp reps, and Gase got touchy about it right away, saying Cimini was “trying to stir it up.” Gase said they were trying to balance the work and not overwork either back.
This is a minor thing in a vacuum. But we know there has been a weird relationship between Gase and Bell before Bell ever played a snap for the Jets.
Bell signed with the Jets and not long after there were stories that Gase was against the signing. That was cited as a reason for a power struggle with then-GM Mike Maccagnan, which Gase won. Then the Jets seemed to waste Bell, one of the most talented backs in the NFL, giving him a career low 16.3 rushing attempts per game. The signing of Gore and Bell openly stating he’s not getting enough work in practice doesn’t bode well for Gase figuring out how to use Bell properly.
The Jets’ dysfunction is a running story in the NFL, and it’s not getting better this month. Hopefully, Gase’s plan works out and Bell will be ready to roll at the start of the season. Even if he disagrees with it.
