Anne Hathaway has admitted that "no-one" on the set of The Witches knew she was pregnant while filming the movie.

The Oscar-winner announced in July last year that she was expecting her second child with husband Adam Shulman, and welcomed a baby boy later in the year.

However, Hathaway has revealed that she managed to keep pretty tight-lipped about the pregnancy while filming the Roald Dahl adaptation last year.

"It was special," she told USA Today. "I had this gorgeous secret and my little pal with me and we were making something that felt so fun. Even costume designer Joanna Johnston swore she had no idea. Maybe she was being discreet.

"I didn't tell a soul until I knew I was out of the first trimester and then I told as few people as possible – the stunt coordinator, Bob (director Robert Zemeckis) and the producer," Hathaway added.

Asked whether co-star Stanley Tucci knew, the actress continued: "My first scene when I was about nine weeks pregnant was with Stanley. And then I filmed my last scene with him. It was so funny, his eyes when he came in and saw me 16 weeks pregnant were like, 'Oh!' I was like (shrugs), 'Yeah'."

The Witches was recently made available on streaming after skipping a cinema release, with UK fans able to access it on Premium Video-on-Demand (PVOD).

In Digital Spy's review of the movie, we labelled it "a bland and neutered version of Dahl's book".

"When the original movie still holds up 30 years later, the question is why would you show them this polished, but ineffective, version of The Witches over the original?" we added.

The Witches is out now on HBO Max in the US and is available to rent in the UK from October 26.
