Andrew Casares sets school record and Edward Little boys earn highest-ever KVAC finish

Mar. 18—Andrew Casares broke a 31-year-old school record and led the Edward Little boys swimming team earned its highest finish in the KVAC Class A championships, placing second in this year's virtual meet.

Mt. Ararat won the boys title with 171 points, and the Red Eddies placed second, only four points back (167). Messalonskee was a close third at 166 points. Lewiston (140) placed fifth and Leavitt (48) eighth.

Mt. Ararat's Keegan Rowe (200-yard individual medley) and Caleb Williams (50 freestyle) each won an individual race and joined Sam Wright and Aidan Saunders to claim a pair of relay wins for (200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay) for the Eagles.

The Edward Little girls (180), with only eight swimmers, finished third behind conference champ Cony (268) and runner-up Brunswick (181).

Amanda Jorgensen won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and swam a leg of two relay wins (200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay) for Cony.

The results of the virtual meet were announced Wednesday. Due to COVID-19 protocols, each team swam separately at various locations over the past few weeks.

Casares' school record came in the 500-yeard freestyle. His time of 4 minutes, 58.40 seconds surpasses the previous school best, set by Lucien Ouellette in 1989, by more that 12 seconds, according to Edward Little swimming coach Scott Morrison.

Casares, a sophomore, took first in the KVAC in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle, and he helped the Red Eddies place first in the 400 freestyle relay and second in the 200 freestyle relay. Konnor Simpson, Jack Hart and Isaac Raymond swam with Casares in both relays.

Individually, Simpson finished third in the 100 backstroke and the 100 freestyle, Hart took third in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free, and Raymond placed third in the 500 free and fifth in the 50 free.

Lewiston's Caleb Suli and Alex Akers each earned an individual conference title and a runner-up. Suli won the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.81 seconds and came in second to Casares in the 200 freestyle. Akers (1:04.56) placed first in the 100 breastroke and second in the 200 individual medley.

Suli and Akers also teamed up with Brandon Lynch and Gavin Bavis to claim third-place finishes for the Blue Devils in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.

Bavis also finished fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 500 free, one spot ahead of Lynch.

Leavitt — which practices with Edward Little, along with Oxford Hills, St. Dom's and Lisbon — had a pair of runner-up finishes: Gavin Holbrook in the 50 free and Nicholas Tirell in the 100 butterfly. Holbrook also finished third in the 100 breast, while Tirell added a fifth-place showing in the 200 free.

Saint Dominic Academy's Patrick Manson swam the fifth-best time in the 100 backstroke and the ninth-best in the 100 freestyle. St. Dom's and Lisbon aren't members of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference, so their swimmers don't have official finishes and their times don't count toward the team standings.

Messalonskee's Jadyn Arnold took first in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke to join Casares as a double winner.

Izzy Bellefleur, Emma Hefty, Mya Vincent and Samantha Poirier paced the Edward Little girls to a third place finish.

Bellefleur won the girls 100 breaststroke (1:08.21) and finished second in the 200 individual medley. Hefty placed second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free. Mya Vincent had a pair of third-place showing, in the 50 free and 100 free — and Poirier was third in the 100 butterfly.

The foursome also teamed up for a pair of runner-ups, in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Also for Edward Little, Kora Martel swam to fifth place in the 200 IM and the 100 breast for Edward Little.

The Lewiston girls finished fifth with 143 points, led by Kate Bilodeau's second-place finish in the 50 freestyle and fourth-place in the 100 freestyle.

Bilodeau also was part of two top-five relays: Third place in the 200 freestyle relay with Fiona Landry, Elizabeth Knowlton and Madeline Cote; and fifth in the 200 medley relay with Cote, Landry and Chloe Bilodeau.

Another Lewiston Bilodeau, Emily, placed fifth in the 500 freestyle.

Leavitt (46 points) finished eighth. Samantha Deblois finished seventh in two races, the 50 freestyle (one spot ahead of teammate Jalee Boucher) and the 100 backstroke, for the Hornets. Boucher also earned a seventh-place finish in the 1oo freestyle.

Oxford Hills' lone participating swimmer, Emily Cummings took 15th in the 100 breaststroke and 17th in the 50 freestyle.

Among the non-scoring teams, Lisbon's Lilah Bright swam the sixth-fastest time in 200 IM, and St. Dom's Natalia Russell was ninth fastest in both the 50 free and 100 free.

Mt. Ararat's Cora Spelke won two individual events, the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. The other individual girls winners are Cony's Tessa Jorgensen (200 IM), Lunden Dinkel (100 butterfly) and Addie Burnham (500 freestyle).

Cony's three champion relays teams are: Tessa Jorgensen, Dinkel, Amanda Jorgensen and Burnham (200 medley relay); Dinkel, Morgan Henderson, Grace Rodrigue and Emma Thomas (200 freestyle relay); and Amanda Jorgensen, Burnham, Thomas and Tessa Jorgensen (400 freestyle relay).
