A Northern Kentucky city appointed a new mayor following the departure of its last mayor earlier this month.

Paul Markgraf was sworn-in as mayor of Lakeside Park during a city council meeting Monday evening. He was appointed council in a unanimous vote.

Markgraf, a decades-long resident and longtime councilmember of Lakeside Park, will serve the remainder of former mayor David Jansing's term.

"As mayor, it is my intention to be open and honest and listen to everyone," Markgraf said during Monday's council meeting. "My pledge as mayor is to just do the best we can."

Jansing, who also serves as an assistant fire chief with the Fort Mitchell Fire Department, announced his resignation during a meeting of city council on Dec. 13. His resignation went into effect on Jan. 1.

"My reason for resignation is personal to me," Jansing told city council in December. In an email to The Enquirer last month confirming his decision to resign, Jansing did not elaborate on what those reasons are.

Lakeside Park City Council had 30 days to fill the vacancy under state law. If the position remained vacant after 30 days, it would have fallen to the governor to appoint a replacement.

Jansing was re-elected in 2018 as mayor of Lakeside Park, a city in Kenton County with a population of just over 2,800. He was the only candidate to run for the seat.
