Amazon Scores Documentary Series About Argentinean Soccer Legend Maradona

Amazon has scored a high-end documentary series about soccer player Maradona, one of the most gifted and controversial players of all time.

The SVOD service has commissioned the series from BTF Media, the Miami and Spain-based production company founded by Mexico’s Francisco Cordero and Ricardo Coeto.

The series, produced in association with Dhana Media and Raze, will look at the Argentinean’s early life and his prolific career, spanning from the Latin American country through Spain and Italy and will chronicle his key role in leading his national team to win the ’86 Mexico World Cup.

It is the latest doc on the player following Asif Kapadia’s doc, which is constructed from over 500 hours of never-before-seen footage. It is Amazon’s latest entry into the sports world, which recently ordered a series following Premier League champions Manchester City as part of its All or Nothing strand.

“There are few players whose notoriety transcends generations and geographic borders – Maradona is a household name around the world, and his career highlights are still discussed today among the biggest moments in soccer’s history,” said Brad Beale, Vice President, Worldwide TV Content Acquisition, Prime Video. “We’re excited to bring Prime Video members on this incredible journey.”

“The story will feature an unprecedented look at Maradona, not only as a champion but also as a man. Together with Prime Video, Dhana Media and Raze we are diving deep into the essence of the story and working on all of its aspects to bring it to a global audience,” added Cordero.
