Allen sinks Savanna on Homecoming night
Oct. 24—ALLEN — The Allen High School football team pitched a first-half shutout and then broke the game wide open by scoring 27 consecutive points in the third quarter and made it a happy Homecoming night with a 48-12 win over Savanna Friday night.
The Mustangs improved to 5-3 overall and are now 3-2 in District A-6 play. Savanna left town at 1-6 and 1-4.
Allen is tied with Mounds for the all-important fourth spot in the district. Stroud is atop the A-6 standings at 5-0 followed by Liberty and Hartshorne at 4-1. The Mustangs are scheduled to host Hartshorne in a Week 9 contest that will have big district ramifications for both teams. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Coach Matt McCreary's bunch was dominant on both sides of the ball against the Bulldogs. The AHS defense limited Savanna to minus 10 passing yards and eight total rushing yards. Meanwhile, Allen piled up 211 yards on the ground and 195 more through the air en route top 406 yards of total offense.
Allen's rushing attack consisted of six different players with 25 yards or more. Ethan Smith topped the Allen charts with 41 yards on 11 carries. Noah Bray followed with 39 yards on six tries, quarterback Bodee Garrett with 33 yards on nine carries, Curt Carlos with 29 yards on just three attempts, Garrett Nix with 27 yards on seven totes and Brayden Tatum, who got free for 25 yards on his only carry of the contest.
Nix opened up the Allen scoring with a 14-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Carlos ran for two more points to put the home team on top 8-0.
Allen scored a pair of touchdowns in the second period, a 14-yard run by Garrett and a 37-yard pass from Garrett to Brayden Tatum. Riley Tomb kicked the PAT after the Garrett TD and the Mustangs had forged a 21-0 lead at halftime.
After Savanna scored on a 10-yard run to open the third period to get the Bulldogs within 21-6...Allen took off.
Tatum hauled in a 41-yard TD pass from Garrett to extend the Allen lead to 27-6.
Bray got free for a 23-yard touchdown run and Carlos converted the two-point play to push the Mustang advantage to 35-6.
Garrett and Tatum then connected for their third touchdown pass of the night — this time from six yards out — and the Allen lead had expanded to 41-6. Tatum finished with six catches for 101 yards and three scores.
Smith got in on the scoring fun in the closing seconds of the third quarter with a 3-yard TD run. Tomb booted another PAT to stretch the Allen lead to 48-6.
Savanna then returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to end the scoring.
Garrett ended up completing 12-of-16 passes for 195 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Easton Ledo had three receptions for 49 yards.
Allen's defensive leaders included Jagger Caldwell, Adam Sawatzky, Tatum and Kale Horton. Ledo had a pair of interceptions for the Mustangs.
