Ovechkin passes Esposito for 6th place all-time in goals originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Alex Ovechkin was already keeping pretty exclusive company, but with his 718th goal on Tuesday, he has reached a mark only five other players have reached in history and pulled ahead of Phil Esposito for sixth all-time in goals.

Ovechkin tied Esposito at 717 on Monday against the Buffalo Sabres. The very next day, he pulled ahead of him against the New York Islanders. It was a vintage Ovechkin goal, firing a one-timer on the power play from the office to beat Semyon Varlamov.

After a slow start to the season, Ovechkin is now red-hot with goals in each of his past four games and five goals in his past six.

Ovechkin has now passed Mike Gartner and Esposito this season in his climb up the all-time list, but he has a ways to go to crack the top five. Marcel Dionne sits fifth all-time with 731 goals, 13 away from Ovechkin. After him sits Brett Hull (741), Jaromir Jagr (766), Gordie Howe (801) and, of course, Wayne Gretzky's ultimate record of 894.
